Congratulations to all of the boys who trialled to make this year’s trials the most competitive in recent years and to those who were selected to compete at the 2014 Junior National Championships, held on July 12 & 13 at Valentine Sports Park, Glenwood.
Unfortunately the boys could not match the experienced Queensland opposition in the final, earning them a silver medal (23:12).
Meet the Coach – Julian Döring
Julian began playing handball when he was eight years old, with his German hometown club, VFL Kamen. Four years later, his hard work and dedication earned him his spot in the VFL Kamen state youth team to compete at the North Rhine Westphalia state competition. Since then, Julian has continued his dedication towards training and currently plays in the fifth division in Germany for Muenster 08.
In recent years, Julian has coached the VFL Kamen Youth Boys team, improving the boys’ playing abilities and achieving some great results, maintaining the club’s high standard of handball.
Julian has temporarily relocated to Sydney to complete his three-month internship with Handball Australia as part of his Bachelor of Science (Sports & English). Upon his arrival, Julian proved to be an integral team member at the 2014 NSW Schools Championships, refereeing, officiating and mentoring school teams, sharing his passion for handball with the kids. He quickly found a club team to play with – current Club Competition first-place holders, Harbourside HC and has continued to referee and officiate matches without hesitation every Saturday. During his time here, Julian has also regularly coached alongside the Australian Men’s and Women’s Beach Handball team coach, Jan Ottosen as well as NSW U21 Men’s team coach, Diego Llorente.
Julian’s experience and passion for handball as well as his caring, motivated attitude towards coaching his players is sure to give the NSW team the best opportunity for success at the Junior National Championships in Sydney this July.
