NSW are 2007 National Champs!!

Well done to the NSW teams who brought home the Women’s and Men’s titles from the Senior Nationals in Canberra recently. Congratulations to NSW players Kenneth Toerlen and Sally Potocki, named as the outstanding players. Thanks to our host ACTHA for a great competition and to Canberra and Victoria (as well as the other states too, of course) for some thrilling handball and especially making our teams work hard in the finals. Thanks also to all the NSW volunteers and supporters. For more information see ACTHA’s website at www.acthandball.com.au and some nice pics and reports at www.canberrahandball.com.au.

2007 NSW Handball season finals’ action!

NSW Handball congratulates Canberra on taking out the Men’s 2007 club season competition and Sydney University for the Women’s competition.

Canberra, in their first season with NSW Handball, ended with a solid win over 2006 Spring season winners Taysols. Taysols started very strongly but Canberra quickly and aggressively regrouped and then kept them at bay - frustrating Taysols by limiting their breakthroughs and forcing them to shoot from outside. For Canberra it was a great antidote to their very recent and self-described ‘thrashing’ by Taysols just two weeks prior.

In the play-off for third place, Sydney University decisively held off a depleted Harbourside, who played the entire final with only seven players. Sydney University showed the strong form that had pushed Taysols right into double extra time in the previous week’s semi-final.

In a university against university Women’s final, Sydney University dominated University Technology, Sydney from the outset. The injury ridden UTS team fought on but Sydney Uni’s coordinated and relentless fast ‘running and passing’ kept them well ahead throughout.

See Canberra website for some great photos of Men’s finals and semi-finals action.www.canberrahandball.com.au

2007 season finals action!

The season semi-finals proved an exciting start to the finals lead up at the Sports Halls at Sydney Olympic Park on Saturday.
In one of the most exciting men’s matches of the season, 2nd and 3rd tabled teams, Taysols and Sydney University played some thrilling handball that required double overtime to resolve, with Taysols edging ahead to claim their spot in the finals. The second semi final was a play off between 1st and 4th place, with Canberra dominating Harbourside from half time.
Further commentary on matches can be found on Canberra’s website at www.canberrahandball.com.au.

In the Women’s Round action, Harbourside drew with Sydney University but have not tabled enough points to make the final this season.
So the women’s final this week will see Sydney University women play new club UTS Women who have made the final in their first season in the competition.

Finals draw for Saturday August 25
Sports Halls, Sydney Olympic Park
9am Sydney University Women v UTS Women (Final)
11am Sydney University Men v Harbourside Men (3rd place play-off)
12:45* Canberra v Taysols (Final)

(*Please note that the 12:45 game may need to be delayed until 1pm, depending on travel from Canberra)

NSW shines at Junior National Championships!

NSW Junior players did their state proud at the recent Junior National Championships, held in Dural and Blacktown recently. NSW hosted the championships and was the only state to field separate teams in all five categories, Men and Women U21, Men and Women U18 and Junior Men’s Development Team series. The NSW U21 Men and Women won their categories, as did the Development Team, with Victoria taking out the U18's categories. NSW players also featured strongly in the encouragements offered by the National Junior coaches.
So well done to all players, coaches, volunteers and supporters.
Results from the tournament can be found HERE.
