March – 2018 NSW Schools Champs June 4-5

2018 NSW High Schools’ Championships announced for June 4-5 at Blacktown Sports and Leisure Centre, Stanhope.

Calling for interest from schools – new schools and players welcome. Info kits were sent to schools this week. Check your school is included – register your interest with our event coordinator Carter Zhou via nswhandballschools@gmail.com

March – NSWHA AGM reminder

NSW Handball is planning our AGM for Sunday April 29 at 10am at Sports House.

All members are welcome, as there is plenty to be done – please RSVP to bronwyn@nswhandball.com.au so we can allocate space.

March – NSW Season starts Friday nights in April

NSW Club Competition Handball starts in April and will be in two seasons this year – with a break in July

Season One is Friday nights, starting in April, so really soon. We’re still working around venues as Olympic Park is still out of action – the good news is we have a central location this time with the help of UTS (thanks so much). We’ll be at Sydney Boys High in Moore Park.

Make sure you’ve contacted your Club to get involved. Looking forward to seeing you around the courts soon!

January – planning meeting for 2018 on January 10

NSW Handball is holding its first planning meeting for 2018 on January 10 at 7pm at Sports House, SOP. Given the ongoing fire damage situation at Sports Halls, we need to make some serious decisions about the competition season and venues so please make sure you have a club rep there. RSVP to bronwyn@nswhandball.com.au Any new volunteers are also welcome – beginners are welcome.

January – NSW players in Aussie Men’s team for Asian Champs in Korea

Congratulations to our NSW players travelling to represent Australia at the Asian Men’s Championships (World Championships qualifier) in Korea in January – Sebastien Traverso, Tomasz Szklarski and ACT adoptee Karl Warrener. They leave next week.

Players are required to fund most of their participation so if you are able to help please visit the team’s project on the Australia Sports Foundation (who has tax deductible status).

December – NSW Club Beach handball teams prepare for 2018 titles

Hosts of the 20178 Australian Club Handball Championships are calling for entries. The event to be held at Glenelg Beach in SA between February 22-25 2018. Make sure you team is entered as uniforms and other details need to be underway asap.

November – Beach Handball season underway

The NSW Beach Handball season is held on Sundays at Maroubra (south end) between 4-6pm. This is the second season for club competition but there are still plenty of opportunities for social competition and for beginners to come down and try. November – R4 Men’s National League held in Sydney

The final round for 2017 of the HLA (Handball League Australia) for Men was held over the weekend of November 18-19 in Sydney.

It was the most thrilling round yet with many of the matches very tight – keeping spectators on the edge of their seats. On the Saturday newcomers Brisbane Wolves took regular winners Sydney uni into two lots of overtime until defending champions Sydney Uni finally pulled ahead by two points. Sunday’s final saw regular challengers St Kilda take the win over Sydney Uni in the final in a tight and physical match.

Congratulations to both NSW CLubs Sydney Uni and UTS Hawkes for such great performances. Planning for 2018 will occur in January, with the possible addition of more clubs to the event.

October – NSW Men take National title

NSW Men have reclaimed their national title after a six year drought, winning over Victoria in a tough match. Congratulations to the team and Coach Emma Guignard. Our Women came fifth with Queensland taking the title from Victoria in the final.

The Australian Open National Championships were held in Sydney at the Blacktown Sports and Leisure Centre at Stanhope Gardens between October 5-8. Regional representative teams from across Australia and New Zealand competed. Check out the photos on the Handball Australia Facebook page.

Thanks to Anne Mosetter our organiser, along with Scott Fearnside and Bronwyn Thompson. and all our volunteers, players, officials and supporters who came out to help with the event.

September – Harbourside claim both NSW League titles

Harbourside have claimed the NSW League titles for both Men and Women this year, edging out Sydney Uni who have dominated for several years. Its been exciting to see the even competition between all the clubs this season.

We thank everyone for joining in with us (and having to travel distances) at our various temporary venues following the fire damage at our legacy Olympic Park Sports Halls.
